Vikings Split Opening Day

The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team (1-1) defeated Elgin Community College (1-2) 4-3 on Sunday morning and lost to No. 10 Finger Lakes Community College (1-2) 10-6 later that evening.

In the first game of The Ripken Experience, Andrew McCullough (Bethlehem/Delmar) pitched a complete-game and earned the win for the Vikings, allowing just three runs, six hits, two walks, and striking out five.

Hudson Valley scored in the top of the second, after Jon Montesanti (Colonie/Niskayuna) hit an RBI single, scoring Nicolas Teitter (Saugerties/Saugerties) to put the Vikings up 1-0. After a scoreless third inning, the Spartans took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth, Alex Koshgarian (CBA/Cohoes) hit an RBI double to the outfield, scoring Danny Coleman (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs). While on second, Koshgarian stole third and then scored on a wild pitch, giving the Vikings a one-run lead.

The Vikings went up two after Montesanti hit an RBI single to center field, and the Spartans could only score one more run in the final innings to give the Vikings the win.

In game two, Dan Yankowski (Ichabod Crane/Valatie) started on the mound, surrendering five runs, three hits, four walks, and striking out six over five innings.

The Vikings scored on a wild pitch in the first innning, but the Lakers would get the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Going into the sixth with the scored tied at five, Luuk Visser (Thorbecke Voortgezet Onderwijs The Hague/Holland, Netherlands) hit an RBI to centerfield, giving the Vikings a 6-5 lead. Finger Lakes would respond in a big way, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning, sealing the Vikings loss.  

The men take on Ocean at 3 p.m. and Elgin at 6 p.m., tomorrow for the second day of The Ripken Experience.
