The USS Monitor is rich in its Troy heritage: The contact to build the first turreted steam ironclad in the world (Union Navy 1861) was signed in the Manufacturers Bank (now the Franklin Plaza Ballroom) in downtown Troy, and the ship’s steel armor plate was produced at the Burden Iron Works in South Troy, within a mile of the college campus. As part of the Capstone Ceremony, Franklin Plaza Ballroom will present a $6,000 check to the Community Hospice, the recipient of a USS Monitor model donated by the Gene Haas Foundation, an AMT program sponsor. The money will fund scholarships for 10 children to attend Camp Erin, and the USS Monitor model — 44″ L x 22″ D x 15″ H at 1:50th scale — soon will be on permanent display at the Franklin Plaza Ballroom.
