College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Hudson Valley Community College is an open test center for College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Registration is open to the public as well as currently registered students.

Overview

CLEP is based on the premise that some individuals enrolling in college have already learned part of what is taught there. This program allows individuals to demonstrate their college level learning by taking examinations that assess the knowledge and skills taught in college courses. Prior learning could be through their job and life experiences, independent reading and study, or non-credit courses.

There are no prerequisites to take a CLEP exam; no age restriction, and no degree requirements. These programs save time and money! The cost to take a CLEP exam is considerably less expensive than the cost of registering for a college course. Students save time as they are able to earn credit by demonstrating their knowledge on the exam, without the need to attend classes. If a student does not pass the exam, it is as if he/she never took it. No credit of failure will appear on the transcript. The student can repeat the exam in six months.

CLEP is a timed (90 minutes), computer based test and most use a multiple choice format, although a select few include an essay component. Since we have a set number of computers available for CLEP, we are limited in the number of test-takers we can accommodate each month. Therefore, students interested in CLEP are advised to register early, as we often fill our available seats months in advance.

Transfer of Credit

Nearly all American colleges have a policy for awarding credit through CLEP. Students who intend to transfer should contact their transfer college of choice for information on their policy.

Exam Preparation

Having made the decision to take one or more CLEP examinations, most students then want to know if it is worthwhile to prepare for them – how much, how long, when and how should they go about it? The precise answers to these questions vary greatly from individual to individual. However, most candidates find that some type of test preparation is helpful. The college's bookstore and library are resources for textbooks that will help in studying for CLEP.

For more general and study information on preparing for CLEP, we recommend that you visit the CLEP website. For each exam, there is an outline of the knowledge and skill covered in the test, about 25 sample questions similar to those found on the exam, and a list of textbooks and other resources that could be used for study materials. You can also take a practice exam on the Mometrix Test Preparation website.
