Take your creativity to the next level with our wide variety of painting, drawing, weaving and crafting courses.

Basic Watercolor
Join us to discover your own unique ways of using transparent watercolor paint, from free experimentation to more controlled approaches. We will explore mixing and layering colors, while observing flowers, still life and landscape. Learn color theory, pencil sketching exercises, composition, drawing directly with a brush, and planning areas of wash. Everyone is welcome - from first-timers to long-time painters. Please bring any materials you may already have to the first class OR purchase the following supplies: a pan set of transparent watercolor paint, a pointed-round watercolor brush size 6 (approximately), a 9 x 12” pad of 140# watercolor paper, some sketching or copy paper for warm-ups, pencil, masking tape, two water containers, and two pieces of cardboard (slightly larger than size of paper).

Cricut® Crafting Basics
Whether you’re a creative pro or brand new to DIY, Cricut® will help you make personalized, professional-quality projects with ease. Cricut® smart cutting machines allow you to create projects for home décor, parties and events, weddings, apparel and more. Learn how to use Cricut Design Space™ software to find images, projects and fonts, and design your heart out. All great projects start with an idea - make yours come to life using your computer, tablet or smartphone! We’ll learn how to navigate Cricut Design Space™, review the Cricut® smart cutting machine options, materials and tools. You’ll leave with a Spring Butterfly and Floral greeting card to take home. You will need your Hudson Valley username and password. Course fee includes a $3 computer fee and $5 materials fee.

Glass Etching
Have you ever wanted to learn how to personalize your glassware? Together, we will learn how to etch words on glass surfaces. We will practice on glasses and mason jars that you can take home that day. Light-Up Wine Bottle Painting Class
Scientists have linked creative expression to overall wellness, brain stimulation and stress reduction. Art also enhances cognitive abilities, stimulates imagination, sharpens problem solving skills, and so much more! Join the experienced educators from Art in Mind Creative Wellness Studio in learning how to paint on a glass wine bottle that will light up to beautifully glow! You will be walked through the steps of painting a spring blossom mountain scene on a frosted wine bottle. Students must withdraw by March 4 for a full refund.

The class will include:

  • Painting on a frosted wine bottle
  • A battery powered cork with light string attached to insert into bottle
  • An extra set of batteries to take with you
  • An experienced, art educated instructor to walk you through each step
  • All supplies; and no experience necessary

Collecting Fine Art: A History and Practical Guide
This course, divided into three sections – Fine Painting and Works on Paper, Original Prints, and Fine Sculptures and Ceramics – will provide you with the skills needed to curate a collection of art. We’ll discuss how to identify your specific taste as well as how to select the appropriate works for the style of your home, your budget and any installation concerns. This course combines art history with an insider’s guide from the perspective of the art business. We will also discuss the major collections and institutions that specialize in each medium.

Are you tired of clothes not fitting you? Alterations can be so costly. Why not do it yourself? In this class you will learn different methods of altering clothing or other household items. Knitting for Beginners
With only two stiches, you can create endless designs. This class will make a sampler neck scarf and ribbed hat using the garter stitch (knit every row), the stockinet stitch (knit a row, purl a row) and ribbing. Learn to cast stiches into the needles and bind off the end row of stitches. This relaxing, creative class can be fun whether you knit for yourself or for someone else. Knitting needles and yarn will be provided at the first class. Class fee includes $7 materials fee.

Crochet for Beginners
In this class, you will learn the basic crochet stitches, including single, double and half double, by creating a sampler scarf using various popular pattern designs. You will also learn the popcorn stitch, cluster stitch and others while learning to follow the directions of a pattern. Crochet uses one hook so is easier to do for some of us (even if you are left handed!) After completing this class you will be able to make blankets, hats, purses, and more. Hook and yarn will be provided at the first class. Class fee includes a $7 materials fee.

BASKET WEAVING WORKSHOPS

Criss Cross Bread Basket
Weave this adaptation of the criss cross basket from last semester using a wooden Williamsburg handle for a longer, rectangular shape. This sturdy basket is woven with natural and dyed reed and measures 15” long by 9” wide and 5” tall without the handle. It is finished off with a dyed reed decorative top knot. Springtime Splendor
This basket is for experienced weavers only!
Using a plastic bowl as a mold, we will start to weave on a 5” round wooden base. Using various sizes of dyed and natural reed, we will do some twining and twilling as well as embellishments with ash indian curls to give the basket a distinctive look. The finished basket is approximately 5” tall and 10” wide. Course fee includes $35 materials fee. You’ve Got Mail
We’ll learn to weave this hanging wall basket, perfect for the day’s mail, using natural, dyed reed and seagrass in a choice of colors, and finish it off with a sturdy hand carved oak bushel basket handle. This rectangular basket measure 12” long by 4” wide and 6 1/2” tall without the handle. Course fee includes $28 materials fee. Stars and Stripes
This basket is woven with natural, red and blue reed or varying sizes. Starting with a woven round base of 6 1/2”, it is approximately 8” tall. Stars and Stripes is accessorized with a fabric strip of stars on a blue background and finished off with navy leather bushel basket handles. Course fee includes $30 materials fee.
