This course will provide an overview of the basic principles of communications and fundraising for not-for-profit organizations. It is intended as a primer for non-profit board members and staff. Wipe Your Feet Before You Step All Over Me! Practicing Assertiveness Skills

If you hate your haircut, do you tell the stylist? If a friend returns your sweater with a stain, do you ask her to clean it? If your neighbor wanted to borrow your Waterford punch bowl for her child’s bobbing-for-apples game, would you turn her down? If the answer to these questions is “no,” you could be a people-pleaser. This is a light-hearted session to help people-pleasers stop being doormats and build assertiveness skills. We’ll explore “agreeableness” as one of the “big five” personality traits and learn about the Stages of Change behavior theory. You’ll walk away with an action plan to start standing up for yourself. This course is facilitated by a recovering people-pleaser who understands the challenges of learning to be more assertive and is ready to help you on your journey!

American Sign Language

American Sign Language (ASL) is the third most used language in the United States today. This course is designed for students who are interested in learning about the Deaf community and developing ASL expressive and receptive skills. The course will provide an introduction to ASL and Deaf culture. You will learn practical and common language so you can have a brief conversation with someone from the Deaf community. Learning will include a combination of lecture, practice exercises, video, and class discussion.
