Students working with their teacher in a classroomThe EOC offers three levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to provide individuals with limited English proficiency the opportunity to develop listening, reading, and writing skills in English.

Students enrolled in any of the ESL classes also have access to language software programs to help them achieve their goals.

What Will Students Learn?
Students learn to master speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English, including vocabulary, reading and writing, grammar, sentence structure, paragraph development, spelling, active listening and conversational skills.

EOC Fosters Diversity
The EOC's ESL graduates have come to the United States from Africa, Burma, China, Korea, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Croatia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Vietnam and many other countries around the world. EOC ESL students are native speakers of Hindi, Krio, Kurdish, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, Egyptian, Burmese and countless other languages.

After completing all levels of the ESL program, some students continue their education at the EOC through the HSE Preparation program or the College Preparation program, or choose a vocational program.

Program Requirements

Individuals applying for the ESL program will be required to complete an assessment during the admissions process.

Admissions into EOC's ESL program requires individuals to have a basic command of the English language prior to acceptance into the program.

The assessment includes an oral conversation, reading comprehension and a brief writing exercise. The reading comprehension includes a short paragraph and a series of true/false questions. Individuals will also be provided an image and asked to write three sentences about that image.

Individuals that need further assistance with basic English as a Second Language skills will be referred to other community agencies if unable to complete the assessments described above.
