“I feel like I've been able to get to know my professors and they've all been very helpful.”

Bright, articulate and just 16 years old, Sophia Lenigk began her college career in 2020, when the global pandemic was at its height.

That would be enough to intimidate any student, but Sophia persisted and excelled in some of the college’s most difficult courses in her pursuit of a Biological Sciences degree.

“That first year of college being online, maybe helped my transition because I could still have some of the safety and comfort of staying at home while exploring higher level courses and meeting professors,’ she said. “But I didn't really have a reason to be nervous. At Hudson Valley, the class sizes are pretty small. I feel like I've been able to get to know my professors and they've all been very helpful.”

Sophia was homeschooled for much of her youth and said she was well-prepared to enter college at a young age. Her 4.0 grade point average over the past two years proves that point. She hopes to continue her education but hasn’t decided what exact path she wants to take. As an 18-year-old college graduate, she has plenty of time to make that decision.

“I think that you could say that a lot of my motivation comes from the fact that yes, I am young and therefore, I think there's still a lot about myself that I don't know. I guess I tell my myself that if I don't try it, I'll never know if this is something that I will enjoy doing.”
