College Looking for New Students in Albany, Troy and...Beijing

Each fall, admissions representatives from Hudson Valley Community College travel the well-worn circuit of Capital Region high schools as they recruit students for the college's more than 80 diverse degree and certificate programs. But this year, Hudson Valley will be going a bit further afield than Gloversville, Warrensburg and Greenville in search of new students.

For the first time ever, Hudson Valley will be making a concerted international outreach for new students. Dr. Jay Deitchman, the college's coordinator of international student services, will join two dozen other college and university representatives on a ten-day trip to China starting Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Hudson Valley will be the only two-year community college on the trip, which will make stops in four major Chinese cities. Other institutions on the trip include The University at Albany, Loyola Marymount University, New Jersey Institute of Technology and San Diego State University.

The tour is run by Linden Educational Services, a company which works to link international students with colleges and universities in the United States.

Deitchman will visit college fairs and high schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian and Nanjing, and speak with students about the opportunity to study at Hudson Valley Community College. The college generally has a couple dozen international students studying on campus each year, but has never actively recruited internationally, until now.

The potential for student housing in the future and the availability of numerous transfer agreements with other colleges and universities will make Hudson Valley a viable choice for many Chinese students, the college believes. Deitchman has been the international student advisor for the past 12 years.
