Staff Member Named to SUNY-wide Hispanic Leadership Group

Alfredo Balarin, the college's assistant director of student life, has been named by Governor Cuomo to the inaugural class of fellows at SUNY's Hispanic Leadership Institute (HLI).

The HLI fellows include 12 prominent Hispanic and Latino/a leaders from across SUNY's 64 campuses. The group is charged with developing and supporting the next generation of executive-level Hispanic/Latin leaders across the SUNY system.

Balarin has held his post as assistant director of student life at Hudson Valley since 2009. In November 2017, he was elected to the Albany Common Council, representing the 11th Ward.

"Alfredo is extremely civic-minded, and he is invested in helping young people achieve their goals through higher education," President Drew Matonak said. "We are proud that Governor Cuomo has chosen to recognize him with this fellowship, and we know Alfredo will garner the tools and training necessary to draw more talented people to work and study in the SUNY system."

The inaugural HLI fellowships are held by provosts, chief academic officers, chief business officers and others from across the State University system. View a full list of the inaugural class of HLI fellows.

Over the course of the program, fellows will participate in mentoring and development programs to support their success. One of the main goals of the HLI is to help build the diversity of students, staff and faculty at the State University.

The institute also will work with the SUNY Chief Diversity Officer to help ensure that search committees are trained to successfully recruit top Hispanic candidates to leadership positions within the university system.
