Tax Filing Assistance Available for Students and Employees
February 20, 2019
Tax season is just around the corner and thanks to a new collaboration with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, Hudson Valley Community College students and employees who make less than $66,000 annually can get free help with their returns this year.
Hudson Valley is only the second SUNY college or university to roll out this collaboration with NYS Tax and Finance, according to Accounting, Entrepreneurship and Marketing Department Chair Ricky Thibodeau.
“Representatives from Tax and Finance will be on campus over the next two months to help students and employees navigate the new tax code laws and complete their returns,” Thibodeau said. “This is a great opportunity for our students and employees but also a great opportunity for some of our Accounting students to get hands-on experience in tax accounting. We hope many of them will be able to shadow and help the professionals from Tax and Finance.”
Changes in the tax laws brought about by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act signed by President Trump may have an impact on individual or joint income tax filers this year.
There are currently four dates scheduled for the tax assistance on campus – Feb. 25, March 4, April 1 and April 8. Three sessions each day - 9 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. – will be held in Bulmer Telecommunications Center, room 1053.
To schedule an appointment, text “Tax” to (518) 419-1291 or email OutreachServices@tax.ny.gov. Walk-ins will be welcome as space is available.
