College in the High School Program Earns National Reaccreditation
June 25, 2019
Hudson Valley Community College’s College in the High School (CIHS) program recently was reaccredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP), a national body that oversees concurrent enrollment programs between institutions of higher education and high schools.
Hudson Valley’s CIHS program offers local high school juniors and seniors at 35 partner schools the opportunity to take college-level courses in their high schools at a reduced tuition rate.
CIHS works with numerous districts around the Capital Region including Troy, Cohoes, Columbia, Watervliet, Averill Park, Albany, Berlin, Colonie, Hoosic Valley, Lansingburgh, Shaker, Shenendehowa and Brittonkill school districts. In the spring 2019 semester, 2,120 students were registered for College in the High School classes.
Hudson Valley’s CIHS program initially received national accreditation in 2011 and is one of only 112 such programs across the country that are accredited.
Accreditation ensures that the college’s CIHS courses are of the same quality and rigor as on-campus courses offered by the institution, that students are held to the same standards of achievement as students taking on-campus courses and that instructors meet academic requirements for faculty and instructors teaching at the host institution.
To earn accreditation from NACEP, concurrent enrollment programs undergo a rigorous peer-review process conducted by a team of representatives from NACEP-accredited programs. The reaccreditation is valid for seven years, during which time programs are expected to uphold NACEP’s standards and report on program practices.
“College in the High School is another great example of how Hudson Valley is meeting the needs of our community,” said President Roger A. Ramsammy. “Reaccreditation proves that we are meeting the highest possible standard of academic excellence, helping to ensure the credit students receive can transfer when they continue their college career, here or at another college or university.”
“I’m very pleased to recognize the College in the High School program at Hudson Valley Community College as one of a select group of 112 concurrent enrollment partnerships nationwide accredited through NACEP’s extensive peer-review process,” said Dr. Diana Johnson of NorthWest Arkansas Community College, the 2018-19 chair of NACEP’s Accreditation Commission. “Hudson Valley Community College has demonstrated to its peers that the college courses it offers in high schools are of the same high quality as college courses offered on campus.”
