April 19, 2021

Two members of the Hudson Valley Community College student body were named recipients of the 2021 State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, one of the highest student honors awarded by the SUNY system.

The recipients are Tatianna Moragne, an Environmental Science major from Watervliet; and Logan Simms, a Business Administration major from Greenwich.

The SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence acknowledges students for outstanding academic and community service achievements. Those honored have demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership, campus involvement, community service or the arts.

During her time at the college, Moragne has distinguished herself as a student leader and she is also deeply involved in bettering her community. On campus, she is secretary of the Student Senate, a member of the Faculty Student Association and secretary for the Black and Latino Student Union. As a community volunteer, she has coordinated efforts to eradicate invasive species, managed community garden participants and volunteers, and found practical ways to implement sustainability to the local community. She also has written grants and managed several projects related to environmental sustainability at the community level.

Simms has distinguished himself through service to others, both on and off campus. A member of the Faculty Student Association, he is active in the Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society and organizes the chapter’s monthly volunteer work at the Regional Food Bank. He is president of the Student Christian Association and president of the college’s Investment Club, where he encourages every member to be part of the club’s activities. Logan is an exemplary student and aims to continue his education and ultimately begin a career in finance field. He also is an award-winning furniture maker and has taught woodworking during mission trips in Africa, as well as donated his hand-crafted pieces for fundraising purposes.

SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence recipients from all 64 SUNY institutions were recognized at a ceremony on Wednesday, April 14.

“Tatianna and Logan epitomize the unique combination of service, leadership and academic achievement that are the hallmarks of Student Chancellor’s Award recipients,” said President Roger Ramsammy. “They certainly are deserving of this honor and, on behalf of the college community, I am so proud to share in their recognition.”
