April 14, 2025
On Friday, April 11, undergraduate and graduate students from colleges and universities across the state shared their research during the third annual Capital Region STEM Poster Showcase. The event took place in the McDonough Sports Complex from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Industry professionals, community members, faculty, staff, and local high school and college students were invited to explore a variety of STEM topics as the participants showcased their knowledge and research. Students’ posters were also professionally judged by industry and college representatives who provided valuable insights on the future of STEM.
The event featured Executive Director of LifeSciencesNY Win Thurlow as its keynote speaker. LifeSciencesNY is an industry association focused on fostering innovation and helping New York State’s bio/med industry to grow and thrive. Members are New York’s pharmaceutical, medical technology, and bio/med companies, leading academic research institutions, manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers.
“We are thrilled to provide this platform for the next generation of bright young scientists to showcase their work and connect with industry leaders who are shaping the future of science and technology in our region,” said Dr. Donna Barron, professor and biotechnology program coordinator at Hudson Valley Community College. “This event is an excellent opportunity to foster collaboration between academia and industry, and we look forward to the exciting discussions that will take place.”
Over 100 students from Hudson Valley Community College, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Clarkson University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Siena College, Skidmore College, SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Schenectady County Community College, Union College and University at Albany shared their work at the showcase.
According to the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, STEM occupations make up 24% of the U.S. Workforce, and that percentage continues to rise.
“I am so proud of our students for all of the time and hard work they have put into this project,” said Officer in Charge Louis Coplin. “The STEM Poster Showcase is a very special opportunity for our students to showcase their research, and it’s also a terrific way for industry professionals to see what this next generation of scientists is capable of. Our STEM faculty do a wonderful job preparing our students for this event each year, and we are thankful for all of the sponsors who have made it possible.”
The 3rd Annual Poster Showcase was sponsored by Regeneron, General Electric, GlobalFoundries, The Center for Economic Growth, and CBET (Center for Biopharmaceutical Education and Training) with additional contributions from Taconic Biosciences and the Neural Stem Cell Institute.
